House Passes Bipartisan Defense Bill to Keep America Safe, Provide the Resources Our Troops Need | Speaker.gov

WASHINGTON, DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement applauding House passage of the Conference Report to H.R. 1735, the Fiscal Year 2016 National Defense Authorization Act:

“Our men and women in uniform overseas are putting their lives on the line every day to confront the grave threats posed by ISIL, al Qaeda and the Taliban, and Vladimir Putin’s acts of aggression.  It is our sacred responsibility to provide them with the resources they need to protect America and return home safe.  The bill the House has passed today will provide the resources for a strong national defense in a fiscally responsible way, while providing pay for our troops, expanding retirement benefits to troops who currently get nothing, and providing a smoother transition to civilian life for those with health conditions.  Notably, we are getting this done while meeting the president’s exact funding level request.

“I want to thank Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) and our Senate colleagues for all their hard work to complete this bipartisan legislation.  This is just one example of the things Congress can achieve when members come together around areas of common ground, and I hope President Obama will think long and hard before following through on his threat to veto it.

“Never before has a president held the defense of our nation ransom for a domestic political agenda.  It’s time to stop playing this dangerous game.  President Obama needs to do the right thing, and sign this bill to give our troops the tools they need to keep America safe.”
